Dating After Divorce

When you have been in a relationship for a long period of time, starting a new one can be a bit of a shock. Dusting off your dating skills in order to find someone fresh, new, and hopefully better can make you feel a little nervous. If you're ready to start dating after divorce, here are 3 tips to get you started.

Heal first

Even in the most ammicable of break-ups, there will be wounds left behind. Ultimately when you break up with someone, you are either rejecting them or being rejected. Either way, you know you've made a mistake in love, and it can make you more hesitant to dive back into dating.

Take time to get in touch with yourself, and make sure you know not only who you are, but who you want to be. It can be helpful to make a list of traits that you'd like to see in your significant other—as well as ones you don't.

Don't obsess about your ex

When you do finally go on a date with someone, it's tempting to share stories about your ex. After all, you've spent a long time with that person, and they were probably the closest person you knew. It's probably not the best way to begin a new relationship though. Put your ex where he belongs—in the past.

Put the cellphone down

Phones have become such a big part of our life style that when we hear a text or facebook update, we check our phones reflexively. This might be fine for a casual coffee out with the girls, but when you're starting a new relationship it is hardly the time. Be there, be present, and put the phone down.

Moving on is difficult, but with the right attitude you can find love again. Take all the time you need, be present in the moment, and live for the future. Love will be waiting there for you.
