Dr. Paige Carmichael Receives "Dream" Award for Contributions to Diversity
Dr. K. Paige Carmichael, a Josiah Meigs Distinguished Teaching Professor in the pathology department in the College of Veterinary Medicine, was awarded the University of Georgia’s 2019 President’s Fulfilling the Dream Award. The award was created in 2004 by the Unversity to honor faculty who have strived to further Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream of equality and inclusion.
Dr. Carmichael had the following to say about her motivation. “Veterinary medicine is one of the least diverse of all medical professions,” Carmichael says. “The number that I was told was that less than two percent of veterinarians were African-American and less than 10 percent were other than white.”
Dr. Carmichael is a graduate of Tuskegee University School of Veterinary Medicine and has focused on creating diversity initiatives throughout her career, including increasing the number of minority students that entered the incoming class from 5% to 21%. She has also helped promote inclusion of LGBQT students. Her goal is to put policies into place that provide safety and comfort to students who may otherwise be marginalized.
