Is there an emerging drug resistance in hookworms?

Researchers evaluated fecal samples containing Ancylostoma caninum eggs from three cases of persistent hookworm infections, from a greyhound, a miniature schnauzer and a hound-mix.. The samples were used to perform egg hatch assays and larval development assays for detecting resistance to benzimidazoles and macrocyclic lactones.

Resistance ratios for the three A. caninum isolates tested ranged from 6.0 to > 100 for egg hatch assays and 5.5 to 69.8 for larval development assays. Following treatment with pyrantel, reduction in egg counts was negative.

The data demonstrate multiple anthelmintic resistance in multiple independent isolates of A. caninum, strongly suggesting that this is an emerging problem in the US.
