Protect yourself from leptospirosis

Add this to the list of reasons to close your mouth and wear gloves when cleaning up after animals.  

Apparently a small number of dogs can develop persistent leptospiruria in spite of appropriate treatment.  The Journal of the American Animal Hospital Association recently published a retrospective study that clearly demonstrates the need for follow-up testing to confirm that leptospirosis is fully resolved.
